Prepare your Route
Buy the local papers in advance that advertise garage sales and circle all the ones that
interest you.  Then go online and search for garage sales in your area.  Consult a map and
make a master list of all the sales, then map out a logical path to attend these sales.

Invite a Friend
Invite a friend or two to come along.  It's always fun to shop with a friend. What a fun girl's
day you can make of it.  Hit up a Mom2Mom Sale, a few garage sales, and then head out
lunch.  You can even be home by 2pm.

Clean out your Trunk
Make room for your purchases in your car.  You never know what you may find.  It would be
a bummer to find something great and not be able to take it home.

Change
Bring small bills.  It is hard to bargain and negotiate for a lower price with a $20 bill.  Also,
all sellers have change on hand, but only so much.  If you get a money from the ATM money
machine, then get enough out to get some gas too and then get change at the gas station.
If you remember to get money in advance, the get small bills at the bank - even all singles
are great.  I keep ones and fives in my right pocket folded in half with the ones showing.  I
keep the bigger bills like tens and twenties in my left pocket.

Bring a List of Wanted Items
Make a list before you go out of items you will be looking for - it is easy to get distracted
during the day and forget about some of your target items.

Browse through your children's clothes before leaving and make a list of things you are
looking for like:  Navy Blue shorts for MacKenzie Size 6, Kakhi pants for MacKenzie Size 6
and Maria Size 5, XLarge Maternity Tops for Melissa, XLarge Kakhi Maternity Shorts for
Melissa, etc.

If one of your girlfriend's are expecting, invite them along or ask them if they are looking for
an item in particular and how much they are willing to spend, such as:  an exersaucer for
$15 or less, baby onesies in neutral colors 0-12 months in size.

Early Birds at Garage Sales & Yard Sales
100% of the Garage Sale and Yard Sale Sellers I polled said that they do NOT like Early
Birds.  Most Sales start at 8am which means they are getting last minute things ready from
7am - 8am so that they, the seller, are prepared and organized for their very long day of
selling.  So, feel free to be there a few minutes early and get out of your car right at 8am,
don't go knocking on the door an hour early.  It is 100% not appreciated.

Early Birds at Mom2Mom Sales
Show up at least a 1/2 hour early to a good sale.  I go to the sales that have 50+ tables, so I
am going to devote some time to this sale.  It is worth showing up early.  The Tri-City
Christian Mom2Mom Sale in Canton Michigan have moms lining up at least a 1/2 hour
early there were moms around the corner waiting at this year's past sale.  You want to get in
line early if you are in search of a Big Item that would be in the separate Big Items Room -
items such as: strollers, cribs, playpens, bikes, etc.

Eat a Good Breakfast
Eat a good meal before heading out garage and yard sale-ing.  It can be exhausting and
energy consuming, so make sure you are fueled up before you go.

Ditch your Purse
Don't bring a purse with you.  Just bring your keys and a change purse that will hold your
license, ATM card, and money.   I keep ones and fives in my right pocket folded in half with
the ones showing.  I keep the bigger bills like tens and twenties in my left pocket.

Bring a Large Bag or Two
Bring a Large Canvas Bag to put all your smaller purchases in to make carrying around
your treasures easier.  It will make shopping much easier.

Snacks & Beverages
Pack a cooler in your car with cool drinks, ice packs, and snacks.  This will allow you to stay
focused on garage saling and to not spend your money on fast food on the way.

Comfortable Clothes
Dress in comfortable clothes and comfortable jogging shoes.  Also, pack a hat and
sunscreen for those hot and sunny days.  If it is a Fall Sale, you may want to just leave your
coat in the car and hurry in.  Mom2Mom sales can be crowded and busy and a coat can
really get in the way of moving along.

Batteries
If you will be shopping for battery operated items like certain kids toys.  Bring a small
screwdriver set that you can buy at a dollar store with a variety of sizes and a stash of
batteries in a little kit that you bring garage sale-ing with you.

Bargaining and Negotiating
Please be reasonable.  Again, when I polled garage and yard sale sellers, they found it very
annoying when they have something priced for $10 and they are offered $1 or they have
something priced at $5 and are offered a quarter.  Most experienced negotiators offer 50%
off the marked price, then the seller comes up 25% and hopefully the seller will ultimately be
happy with getting 25% off at a garage sale.  Example:  an item is priced $4, buyer offers
$2, seller counters with $3.  I often don't negotiate at all if the items are reasonably priced
by the seller.  Other times when I am buying baby clothes and getting a big stack of 20
items that comes to $40, I may ask if they will give me some money off for purchasing 20
items.
