No Room for Bullies
by Jose Bolton & Stan Graeve
From classroom to cyberspace - This book is focused on bullying in middle school and high school. "This book represents a collaborative effort of many individuals who
have distinguished themselves in the fields of parent training, psychology, education, and family development." Some chapter headings include: Defining the Behavior,
Profiles of Key Players, The Acts of Bullies, Bullying in Cyberspace, and Action Plans for Administrators. It discusses various bullying scenarios and the differences in
how boys and girls bully each other. There are important "hot spots" in high schools that a lot of bullying occurs and it is up to the teachers and administration to find
these spots and monitor these spots. The book provides information and advice for parents, teachers, and administrators and have surveys for parents, students, and
administrators to get a handle on assessing the bullying climate. This book has an older focus and makes you aware of situations such as bullying happening through the
internet and those chat rooms and instant messages.
Mom, They're Teasing Me
by Michael Thompson Phd, Lawrence J. Cohen Phd, Catherine O'Neill Grace
This is a great starting place for understanding teasing and bullying. This is a book for parents of children in grade school. I love their Question and Answer format,
where they take a real-life situation and then provide several answers and possibilities for solutions. Chapter titles include: The Everyday Lives of Children: Normal
Social Pain, When Social Life is Scary: Children at Risk, At School and in the Neighborhood: The Social World of Children. The book talks about: When the Group
Causes Trouble, Trying to Buy Friendship, Addressing Social Skills Deficit. "Sociability is one of those things that is hard to define, but easy to see when it's there or
when it's missing. Sociability includes a generally upbeat outlook on life, a genuine interest in others, and expectation of fairness and equity, and above all emotional
warmth." Starting when they are young, we can work with our children on their social skills and reading social cues. We are not powerless in this process nor should we
always blame the other kids, teachers, or the administration. This book is filled with real life stories, scenarios, and solutions for real life teasing and social interactions of
children in school and out of school.
