Tech Time: Slay the Phantom Energy Vampires in Your Home and Office

Oh sure, your electric toothbrush, toaster and TV look innocent enough, but do you realize they’re robbing you blind? It’s true! In fact all your electronics are pulling power even when they’re not on. Which means you’re paying for a lot of electricity unnecessarily.

We found the perfect solutions. First the Belkin Conserve Socket which shuts off the electricity when you’re done toasting your toast, brewing your coffee or charging your phone. Second, the Belkin Conserve Smart AV, a power strip so smart it stops your TV, stereo and gaming system from drawing energy when you’re not using them, but keeps your DVR and cable box on so you won’t miss any of your favorite shows. What exotic and gorgeous location will the Pan-Am crew fly to this week? Will Elena be able to keep Katherine in check on the Vampire Diaries?

Watch this week’s Twirl and watch Carley destroy all the energy sucking vampires around her house, no wooden stake required.

On average, an American household spends $100 per year to power devices while they are off or in standby mode, causing more than 100 billion kilowatt hours and $10 billion in annual energy costs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Digital cable boxes were among a home’s biggest “energy vampires” sucking up to 40 watts of power whether or not the TV set was turned on. Cymbalsky says any appliance, like the cable box, with a standby mode is likely to be a big energy hog. [source: Discovery News]

Guilty as charged for leaving the phone charger plugged in after the phone is fully charged. Same goes for the laptop. This is a great reminder, especially to someone like me who loves to save money!

Golda: Gorgeous Golda! Yes, I have been now turning off some of my power strips before going to bed. I want to check out some of those product Carley from @Digitwirl was telling us about. I know and I bet it all adds up for our pocket books and for the environment, which are both important to me! Great connecting with you here and on Twitter!
